Moving, Handling & Repetitive Work

Regulations

The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 states that: 'it shall be the duty of all employers to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable the Health, Safety and Welfare, of all their employees while at work; The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 place a further duty of care on employers to control the risks of moving and handling while in the workplace.

Some Facts and Figures

If an employee is unfortunate enough to suffer an injury at work, there is a 1 in 4 chance that it will be a back injury caused by trying to move, lift or carry a load which is too heavy or awkward to move safely. The situation is further complicated if the load is a hazardous substance.

  • Each year there are approximately 90 000 back injuries in Britain
  • This results in the loss of approximately 2 million working days
  • The cost, in lost time alone, is estimated at £60 million

Moving and Handling Training

We are able to provide on-site training courses for employees. The half day course consists of a presentation, video, practical demonstration and opportunity for delegates to practice techniques. The aims of the training are to:

  • Reduce back injuries associated with work
  • Reduce fatigue when moving or handling loads
  • Increase efficiency
  • Enable employees to understand how back injuries occur
  • Explain the basic structure of the spine, and how to move and handle loads safely
  • Teach employees to identify and assess risk in handling situations

Course Contents

  • Accident statistics and cost of accidents at work
  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Legislation overview
  • Legal implications and examples of successful court cases
  • Kinetic handling techniques and practical activities
  • Risk assessment

Assessment and Control

Training and informing a workforce on good, safe handling techniques is an essential component to reducing risk through instruction. The target hazard or task needs to be assessed in order to work out if (take out the word 'other') more permanent controls are needed to either remove or reduce
the risk at source.

We are able to use a range of assessment techniques, matched to your situation, to provide a clear measure of the risk to individuals and the actions needed to control it. We can carry out the assessments, train you to do your own in-house, or we can assist in prioritizing your results
following an internal review.
