Occupational Hygiene

Occupational hygiene is concerned with the anticipation, recognition, evaluation and, most importantly, the control of hazards and risks to health from workplace activities.

Regulations

Many regulations made under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 are addressed by occupational hygiene, including:

  • COSHH 1999 (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health)
  • Noise at Work Regulations 1989
  • Control of Lead at Work Regulations 1998
  • Control of Asbestos at Work Regulations 1987

How can Occupational Hygiene help?

Our experienced occupational hygiene practitioners offer a common sense approach to:

  • the identification of hazards in the workplace
  • potential consequences
  • assessment of future risk

The following services are available:

  • Comprehensive occupational hygiene surveys for measuring exposure to dusts, fumes, gases and vapours, noise, thermal environment, etc
  • Examination and test of Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) plant and equipment
  • Investigation and problem solving of undefined health problems at work

Following assessment we are able to help you with the design and implementation of practical solutions to workplace exposure problems, including:

  • Evaluation of working practices and adequacy of existing exposure control measures
  • Application of the 'hierarchy of control' to workplace exposure situations
  • Advice on simple, low cost noise reduction measures
  • Evaluation of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) usage, and development of effective programmes for selection, use and maintenance in accordance with the PPE at Work Regulations 1992.
