Managing Sickness Absence Sickness absence, or absence attributed to sickness is a major and increasing cost to organisations. A recent CBI survey estimated that over 160 million working days are lost through sickness each year. Check below for the role of Occupational Health in tackling this problem. Pre-Employment Health Assessment This normally takes the form of a confidential health declaration questionnaire which is completed prior to employment. Attendance records, health disability and current health status will be assessed against job and fitness requirements by the occupational health department. Occasionally an appointment with an Occupational Health Nurse Adviser or Occupational Physician may be required. Sickness Absence Referrals An individual employee may be referred for a medical opinion where there is concern about their health, performance, or level of sickness absence. The Occupational Health Nurse Adviser or Occupational Physician will provide a report in response to a written referral. On occasions, further advice will be sought from the employee's General Practitioner or Specialist. Rehabilitation Programmes These are designed to enable the employee to return to maximum functioning by gradually increasing the range of duties associated with the job. This may include temporary redeployment, working reduced hours, or limiting the tasks undertaken, on the advice of the Occupational Health Nurse Adviser or the Occupational Physician. Ill-Health Retirement The Occupational Health Service will advise where incapacity
is likely to continue into the foreseeable future, or is permanent. We
will work with an organisations own sick pay scheme and pension scheme
to allow the Employer to manage the case appropriately. Contact
us for more information.
The Cambridge Centre for Occupational Health can advise on a range of strategies to complement your organisation's own absence management policy. We can facilitate the management of sickness absence and help in complying with the Disability Discrimination Act.
